New in 2003! Garvie Session pipes:

Session pipes (in Mopane) - click on image for more detailed version

The ideal mouth-blown pipes for the Highland piper who wants to play in sessions, ceilidhs or folk groups with other instruments, without having to master bellows technique. Also a great solo instrument in its own right.

Features:

  • VOLUME - quieter than GHB (Great Highland Bagpipe), and also quieter than three quarter or half-size Highland pipes. Ideal for playing with fiddles, flutes, accordions and other musical instruments.
  • PITCH - A(440Hz) - plays at the pitch the music is written in (B flat option available soon).
  • TONE - cane chanter reed keeps the characteristic vibrant tone of the Highland pipe chanter.
  • PRESSURE - a considerably lower operating pressure than Highland pipes allows the piper to play in comfort, and without stopping, for an hour or more.
  • REEDS - due to the innovative reed protection and moisture control system designed specifically for these low pressure reeds, they can be expected to have a reasonable operating life. Tests to date suggest at least as long as average GHB reeds.
  • DESIGNS - fully combed and beaded with projection mounts in Highland style, or mounted and part mounted in a simpler Lowland style. Currently available in blackwood with artificial ivory mounts and nickel platted ferrules, or Mopane with boxwood mounts and gold plated ferrules. A picture illustrating the different drone styles is shown below.
  • SCALE - the chanters (like our border pipe chanters) are chromatic within the scale. C natural, F natural, G sharp, D sharp and B flat are all available by cross fingering. See fingering chart.

After a year's development and testing, we have combined the best of Border Pipe and GHB technology with original innovations to produce these new bagpipes. They have already been acclaimed by a number of professional Scottish players.

Patent pending. Fingering chart. Read some more Session Pipe Notes.
